One of my favorite courses during law school was called “How to Start a Law Practice Straight Out of Law School” – an elective taught by Susan Cartier Liebel.
Susan and I stayed in touch after my graduation, and I provided her with some technical assistance when she started blogging about issues related to practicing as a solo lawyer.
Somewhere around April 2008, we began collaborating to build an educational and networking community for solo lawyers and law students. We launched the website about a year later on March 20th, 2009 – it’s called Solo Practice University™.
It’s a full-blown social network with member profiles, groups, forums and blogs. It enables members to connect in a variety of meaningful ways.
Solo Practice University™, in a nutshell, is like an “educational” Facebook for solo lawyers and aspiring solo lawyers.

Two things distinguish Solo Practice University™ from other social networks.
First, it is an educational community. There are about 40 faculty members teaching courses on substantive law areas, marketing and management, technology and work/life balance. The courses are taught via pre-recorded video and audio, text, and interactive office hours.
Second, all members at Solo Practice University™ share a common interest – practicing law as a solo lawyer. This common interest connects all members and creates an immediate level of comfort among members that, before joining the community, are generally complete strangers.
As Solo Practice University™ continues to develop and grow, I’ll write more about how it works and what I’m doing to improve it. For now, you can learn more by reading the about page and signup page.
